Project Background:

On October 8, 2024, our community voted to approve this critical Capital Improvement Project. Designed to strengthen campus security, address immediate infrastructure needs, and create new opportunities for student growth, the project reflects our shared commitment to providing a safe, modern, and enriching learning environment for all students.

  • Construction is Underway!

Construction activities for the Geneseo Central School District Capital Improvement Project are underway. Initial work has focused on project staging, preparation of work areas, and coordinating the first phases of renovation.

Construction teams are working closely with district staff to ensure that work areas remain safely separated from student and staff spaces. Safety fencing, signage, and designated work zones have been established to maintain a secure environment while construction activities take place.

As the project moves forward, our partners at SEI Design Group and Campus Construction continue to coordinate timelines, subcontractors, and project logistics to ensure the work progresses efficiently and according to plan. Updates, photos, and project milestones will be shared on this page as work continues.

  • Construction Continues on Key Spaces

Over the coming months, construction will continue with the renovation of several key spaces within the building. Initial phases will focus on a full renovation of the main gymnasium and attached locker rooms.

Additional work scheduled in the early stages of the project includes:

    • Roof restoration over the gymnasium and surrounding areas
    • Renovation and reconfiguration of team rooms
    • Installation of a dehumidification system to improve conditions in the tunnel area

Throughout these phases, the district will continue to communicate any operational adjustments, including temporary changes to hallway access, entrances, or room locations.

  • Facility Improvements

Following the initial renovation work in the gymnasium area, the project will move into additional facility improvements across the building.

    Future phases will include:

    • Renovation of lower-level restroom facilities
    • Replacement of the existing boiler with a high-efficiency system
    • Construction of new UPK classrooms and improvements to nearby music and art spaces
    • A redesign of the main entrance to improve visitor flow and strengthen building security

What Have We Completed From Our 2021 Capital Improvement Project?

  • A modern building with concrete and wood accents under a clear blue sky.

While creating our new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) labs, the outside of our school got a complete makeover, bringing a modern touch to the outside of our facility.

  • A modern metal walkway with railings extends over a water channel, adjacent to a grey building.

A bridge from the parking lot to the top of our stadium seating has been placed and is in the final stages before being able to open to the public. This bridge will allow easier access from our parking area to the top of the bleachers, making it easier for everyone to be able to enjoy the space.

  • A modern classroom or makerspace with large tables and colorful chairs.

Our new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) labs give students a large, open space where they are encouraged to learn hands-on. These open spaces make for the perfect environment for our students to dive into topics like science, art, and engineering and get practical lessons which they can touch and move.

  • Children laugh and spin on a blue merry-go-round on a sunny playground.

A brand new playground welcomed our students back to school for the 2024-2025 school year! After facing structural issues, our previous playground needed to be replaced, and students are loving this brand new addition to our district!

Past C.I.P. Votes

Geneseo Central School District residents voted 208 Yes to 282 No on Tuesday, January 30, to reject a $28.3 million capital project. This project, titled "Safe Campus: Enhancing Security and Enriching Student Life Capital Improvement Project," would have focused on immediate infrastructure needs and overall enhancements to our facilities.

"While the result is not what we had hoped for, we appreciate the engagement of the Geneseo community in this important decision-making process," Superintendent of Schools Cindy Flowers said.

The proposed project, which was shaped by community and staff feedback, aimed to address immediate infrastructure needs and overall enhancements to the facilities, with a particular focus on the main gymnasium. Repairs are needed to keep the space open for use without negatively impacting physical education classes and athletic programs.

  • The proposed project has a specific focus on: Safety, updating Infrastructure and Continuous Instructional Improvement,

Our students continue to achieve a strong education and our facilities need to not fail them in providing an environment for success. Currently, safety needs have reached a new heightened level. And, like our homes our schools need renovations and upkeep to keep them in good shape.

There have been a series of unfortunate issues in the gym with crumbling walls and mercury content in the flooring. In addition, a boiler is failing and must be replaced and security at the front entrance must be enhanced. These concerns have compelled us to ask our taxpayers to consider investing in our facilities to ensure a safe learning environment for our students and staff.

A capital project is a fiscally responsible approach because the State reimburses 71% of the construction costs.

  • Geneseo Central believes in the processes of continuous improvement.

This project is part of long-range planning that keeps programs up-to-date (such as new classrooms for universal pre-kindergarten) and the repair of aging facilities.

The district went through a Facility Needs Assessment that meets NYS guidelines and employed architectural and engineering firms. It was determined specific areas in our buildings need to be addressed as priorities.

  • A TOTAL SAVINGS of $4.4 million dollars was achieved.

Following community feedback gathered after the previous vote, designs were revised for the gym exterior/outside entrance, the auditorium grand entrance was removed, and the main entrance was redesigned to reduce overall costs. .

A capital project is a fiscally responsible approach because the State reimburses 71% of the construction costs.

  • After final design and the State Education Department’s approvals, it is anticipated that construction would start in 2026 with substantial completion in 2028.

  • The total cost of the project is $23,898,312. And, 71% of the project will be paid for using NYS aid. Through prudent budgeting, the district is reallocating nearly $611,000 from reserve funds put aside solely for capital improvements to further reduce the burden on our community.

A homeowner with a $150,000 assessed home value and Basic STAR exemption would see an initial annual tax increase of $ 19.43 beginning in the 2027-2028 school year. Additional increases would be applied through the 2030-2031 school year. For a detailed breakdown, please visit our Capital Improvement Project page at Geneseo Central School.
